Ethnic Diversity
Travellers to Malaysia will be fascinated by the obvious multi-culturalism of the country: there are Malays, Chinese, Indians and Eurasians; as well as large tribal communities in East Malaysia. Malaysia thus is multi-racial, multi-linguistic, multi-religious and multi-cultural country that choses the way of integration for its citizens, rather than assimilation, thus preserving the characteristics and heritage of its diverse population. The result is a rich tapestry of dress, colours, languages, architecture, customs and culture.
Religion
Freedom of worship is accorded to all creeds. Religion is found everywhere - mosques, temples and churches that exist side by side, in the perpetual round of religious festivals, in diverse rites of passage, and in multitude of everyday sights and sounds. The great variety of faiths within the compass of a small nation is hardly surprising, given the rich ethnic mix that Malaysia enjoys.
Language
Bahasa Melayu is the national language, but English is widely spoken and is the language of business. Cantonese, Hokkien and Hakka are spoken by Malaysia’s Chinese population and Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi among the Indian population.
